What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a form of treatment that is provided by licensed therapists to treat a variety of physical issues, including injuries, diseases, or other physical ailments. This is done through various physical exercises and activities designed to increase mobility, build strength, and improve balance and coordination, with the ultimate goal of reducing pain and improving quality of life. Physical therapy is generally prescribed if you are dealing with an injury or other illness that makes day to day life difficult.

What is Pediatric Physical Therapy?

Pediatric physical therapy is simply physical therapy for kids. Pediatric physical therapists work together with children and their families in treating a wide range of physical ailments and injuries. When working with children, much of the work is intended to improve the day to day life of a child, focusing on things like games and activities. While a physical therapist working with an elderly adult may focus on walking, pediatric physical therapists will focus on increasing mobility with more active, sporting activities like running, jumping, and riding a bike.

Pediatric physical therapy is most often used to improve gait dysfunctions, increase muscle tone, integrate pediatric reflexes, and improve overall body mechanics for increased participation at home, at school, and in various physical activities.

Does My Child Need Physical Therapy?

Does your child need physical therapy? This should be determined on a case by case basis. If your child is struggling, you can get in touch with our expert pediatric physical therapists to learn more about how we can help. Pediatric physical therapy is often recommended when a child has indications of low muscle tone, poor balance, or struggling with physical activities and tasks that would otherwise not be difficult for a child.

In general, if your child is experiencing any of the following issues, they would likely benefit from physical therapy:

  • Weakness
  • Walking Difficulty
  • Balance difficulty/Falls
  • Aches and pains in arms, legs, back or neck
  • Uncoordinated movement
  • Spasms/Muscle Cramps/Spasticity
  • Needing specialty equipment (stimulation devices, walkers, wheelchairs, and standers)
